Chapter 15

The group moved quickly following Malcolm’s lead. He hadn’t been there in more than a year and a half, but he remembered the place well. He’d walked it so many times he could do it blindfolded. He knew where all the cameras were, and as long as they skirted the fence, they would be fine. The cameras were mostly pointed outside of the compound as Wyatt didn’t want them pointed in on himself for fear of the recordings getting into the wrong hands and letting the government find out where he had his stashes of money, food, guns, and other survival basics.

The others stayed quiet as they followed. There were a lot of trees for cover and the ground was rich with foliage and loam. They all watched Malcolm as he stopped at an inconspicuous piece of obsidian.

“See that? That’s the kind he puts over the money. He’s got them all over, so if you see them, try to remember where they are.”

Chromer nearly got money signs in his eyes like a damn cartoon and Norm laughed at him and smacked him playfully on his big stomach. They continued on, and as fate looked to be on their side, TJ was outside chopping wood and looking none too thrilled about it. He was sweating profusely, cussing, and as Malcolm watched, his eyes narrowed with such intense hatred, Max told him later that he’d been surprised TJ hadn’t burst into flames.

Where TJ was, there was no cover. It was a wide clearing that had several stacks of wood. If they rushed him, he would have plenty of time to grab a weapon if he had one nearby, which was likely as he was probably hyper-paranoid between the drugs and the people after him. Malcolm did get a smile while looking at TJ’s broken and bruised face, especially knowing Kirk was the one who’d done it.

“He has a gun, we just can’t see it. I could take the shot from here easily, but is that the way you want this to go down?”

Malcolm tried to keep his voice down, “No! I want him to know why he’s dying.”

Max looked at the woods behind TJ and told the others, “I’ll go around there with Chromer. If he goes for something when you start for him, we have got you covered.”

Norm nodded his agreement. “Just be careful.”

They waited until they saw Max signal that they were in place, then Malcolm glanced at Norm, who gave them the go-ahead. He started out as quietly as he could. Norm had a gun out to his side. Malcolm had no gun yet. He figured he would just use one of the group’s guns when he got in place. He got to the clearing, and if TJ looked up, he would see them clearly, but he was sitting on the stump he should have been using to spit the wood, mumbling to himself.

Malcolm was able to get less than five feet away from him before he turned. TJ jumped to his feet with his eyes wide and his mouth open.
